Tear sheets
Posted: February 10th, 2010
Today I was assigned to do “tear sheets” at my intern. Which means I got to read magazines all day! Yes, it was awesome. They actually wanted me to tear out any pages that had good design, an inspiring photo, or could spark new art ideas and file it into categorical binders. Guys, this is something I like to do on my own for fun so imagine my delight when they considered this “work.”
In high school, H and I would go to Barnes and Nobles and collect a huge stack of magazines and just read, pausing to admire a photo spread or a font we liked. Yes, we are incredibly nerdy. Anyways, while working on the food binder I found an article about this adorable New York bookstore. A bookstore devoted to cookbooks. More specifically an adorable New York gem reminiscent of Meg Ryan’s store in You’ve Got Mail. Besides reading about this bookstore, I picked up a few recipes from Gourmet (RIP), got to admire Tim Walker’s work in Vogue, and even skimmed through a Wired article on new Atheism. I got to talk to Bear about it during my lunch break. I don’t think he really understood why exactly I was doing this assignment, but alas such is the life of an aspiring magazine editor. It’s a life filled with a little too much care over the most meticulous of details. I definitely wouldn’t have it any other way.
